On Tuesday 28th January, the Year 6 children went on a trip to Hospice in the Weald.
After an introductory discussion during which they explored the various services offered by the Hospice and possible fundraising initiatives to assist with the £7 million per year running costs, the children were taken on a guided tour of the building, including spending some time in the day centre, talking to patients.
This was an uplifting and inspiring experience for all concerned, serving both to eradicate any fears or misapprehensions about care of the terminally ill and to present ways in which we can support the outstanding work of such charitable organisations.
On our return to school, Mr Pyle received the following email from Chiara, the outreach manager who kindly invited us to the Hospice.
Hi David,
I just wanted to drop you a quick note to say thank you so much for arranging the visit this morning. So many staff and volunteers have come to me to say how wonderful the group were, how respectful and engaging they were and how wonderful it was to have them visit. And of course, it goes without saying that the patients appreciated their visit. The gentleman who said how the boys “made him feel alive again” is testament to that. You should feel very proud of them – they represented Weald Community Primary excellently.
I hope you have had some interesting conversations with the students on your return to school and that they are feeling motivated to fundraise. If you wanted to extend the Smarties challenge to the whole school, then do let me know, and we can arrange to get more tubes of Smarties dropped off!
